Bobby Lashley was raised in a single-parent household in Junction City, Kansas. His father, a drill sergeant in the U.S. Army, had a significant influence on Bobby’s disciplined upbringing. Lashley’s family roots trace back to Panama, and his mother, who spoke limited English, raised Bobby and his three sisters on her own.
Bobby’s athletic career began in middle school, where he took up wrestling. He went on to attend Missouri Valley College, becoming a three-time NAIA National Wrestling Champion in the 177-pound category. After college, Lashley joined the U.S. Army, where he competed in the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, winning gold and silver medals at the CISM World Championships. A knee injury sustained while avoiding a bank robbery ended his hopes of competing in the 2004 Olympics.
Professional Wrestling Career
Bobby Lashley made his debut in WWE’s developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), in 2005. He was quickly elevated to the main roster on SmackDown and made a significant impact by winning the WWE United States Championship and becoming the first-ever African-American ECW World Champion in 2006.
